Trans & queer groups oppose bill

They say the bill is ill-informed and a threat to the fundamental rights of the community

On Sunday, members of the trans and queer community protested in Azad Maidan, Panjim, against the proposed Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026.

They say that the bill, tabled by Virendra Kumar, Union Minister of Social Justice, practically shows that trans genders do not exist. They reject this bill which they allege is ill-informed and likely ‘ill-intentioned’ too.

They say that it violates fundamental rights including equality, freedom of expression, and the right to life, and allows for invasive scrutiny and exclusion of trans, non-binary, and genderqueer identities.
