The Mineral Foundation of Goa (MFG), in partnership with the Goa Bird Conservation Network (GBCN), is excited to launch a new research and conservation initiative focusing on one of Goa's fascinating coastal birds — the Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris). The sub-species vidalli has distribution on the west coast of India, and in the last two decades has been sighted only in Goa making it a species of conservation importance.
The project is funded under the Wild Incubator Research Programme, an initiative of the partnership between Centre for Wildlife Studies (Bangaluru) and V.M. Salgaocar Corporation Pvt. Ltd.
UNDERSTANDING GOA’S ECOSYSTEM
The project, ‘Population Dynamics, Distribution, and Conservation Concerns of the Collared Kingfisher in Goa,’ aims to better understand where these birds occur, how their populations are distributed, and the challenges they face across Goa's coastal landscapes.
Unlike many of the kingfishers we commonly see around freshwater lakes and ponds, the Collared Kingfisher is closely associated with coastal habitats. It can be found around estuaries, tidal creeks, mudflats, and mangrove ecosystems. Because of its close connection with these habitats, studying the Collared Kingfisher can also help us better understand the health of Goa's coastal ecosystems.
This project isn't just about one bird, though. Goa's mangroves and estuaries are an important part of our natural heritage. They support incredible biodiversity, protect our coastlines, and are closely connected to the lives and livelihoods of local communities. By learning more about the Collared Kingfisher, we hope to contribute towards a better understanding and conservation of these valuable ecosystems.
