Indian passport is a travel document, not proof of citizenship: MEA

MEA clarified that an Indian passport is not standalone proof of citizenship

The Ministry of External Affairs clarified on Wednesday, 24 June 2026 that the Indian passport is a travel document and not a citizenship document. A senior MEA official stated that while a passport enables international travel, it should not be treated as standalone proof of Indian citizenship.
