‘Heaven in your eyes’ art exhibition, organised by The Miskut Jar along with Camões, Centro de Língua Portuguesa (CLP), Goa, features the works of Goan artists Asavari Gurav and Nishant Saldanha. The exhibition is open till August 21 (3pm - 6pm) at Instituto Camões, Panjim.
Asavari Gurav uses the medium of paint, print, drawing and sculpture in her work, which makes a socio-political commentary using an eco-feminist lens with Goa’s ecology at the center.
Nishant Saldanha's ‘Paper Chapel’ is inspired by paper Ganesh idol worship practiced by the Mhamai Kamat family during the Portuguese rule and also from artist Henri Matisse who made art with cut paper. This chapel is moveable and can be folded and tucked away – a gesture against erasure.
“Paper Chapel was first showcased in 2019 at the Serendipity Arts exhibition at the very same venue. I worked on it iteratively over the last 7 years, turning a set of images into a conceptual spatial work,” says Nishant.
“Drawing inspiration from Rumi, Kabir, ragas, Konkani jazz, and memory, these compositions invite viewers into a rhapsody of hope — a glimpse of heaven in the eyes of those who see,” says Asavari Gurav.
The Aria String Quartet played Konkani songs complimenting the works of Asavari which are also heavily influenced by Konkani songs.
Joshua Dias on the violin enthralled the audience on the opening day of the exhibition.
