Goa is a popular tourist destination, one that becomes even more alluring during the monsoons. Ironically, the rainy season also brings significant risks, particularly for those venturing near water bodies such as the state’s enchanting beaches. The recent incident in Baga, where a tourist sitting on a rock near the rough sea was swept away by powerful monsoon waves, serves as a stark reminder of how dangerous and unpredictable the sea can be during this time of year.
THE MONSOONS: CHARMING, YET DANGEROUS
With the arrival of the monsoon each year, Drishti Marine, the government-appointed lifesaving agency, issues regular advisories urging the public to steer clear of the sea. Rough weather conditions, dangerous rip currents, high tides and strong winds make swimming and other water-based activities along Goa's coastline fraught with danger.
From June to September, the monsoon transforms the sea into a perilous environment. The waves grow stronger, currents become unpredictable and weather conditions can change within moments, leaving even experienced swimmers vulnerable.
While Drishti Marine's lifesavers patrol Goa's beaches all year round and are trained to conduct rescues even in adverse conditions, prevention remains the best safeguard. As a precaution, red flags have been hoisted across all beaches under the agency's supervision, clearly indicating that entering the water is dangerous.
Visitors are also urged to exercise caution beyond the shoreline. Rocky outcrops, cliffs and elevated coastal areas become treacherously slippery during the rains, while the increased height, intensity and frequency of waves significantly raise the risk of being swept into the sea. What may appear to be a harmless vantage point can quickly turn perilous as waves crash unexpectedly over rocks and embankments.
DRISHTI MARINE'S MONSOON SAFETY ADVISORY
- Avoid entering the sea or swimming during rough weather
- Stay away from rocks, cliffs & high-wave areas
- Follow all warnings and instructions given by Drishti Marine lifesavers
- Observe beach warning flags and signage at all times
- Avoid water activities during heavy rain and strong winds
- Keep children away from the shoreline during rough sea conditions
- Do not attempt selfies near dangerous waves or slippery rocks
- In case of emergency, immediately alert the nearest lifesaver
So, this monsoon, stay away from the monsoons, and stay safe!
